|The nature of the sexual culture of college campuses is the subject of much intrigue in mass media exploration. How students meet each other, make emotional and sexual connections, and terminate their relationships is the subject matter of most cinematic representations of the college experience, though it has limited exploration in academic research. I examined gender conformity and the experience of anxiety during romantic relationship initiation in college. Participants read seven different initiation opportunity scenarios and reported their likelihood of acting, levels of nervousness, concern for the target's desire, and sense of control over the outcome. The Conformity to Masculine/Feminine Norms Inventory (CMNI/CFNI) was taken and used to examine the relationship between socialized gender and relationship initiation anxiety. Men that scored higher on the CMNI were more likely to report lower levels of anxiety and concern, and higher levels of control over the outcome than did those participants that scored lower on the CMNI. No significant relationship was found between the CMNI and specific strategy choices in each scenario. For both men and women there was no significant relationship between gender conformity and likelihood of action, though an explanation of the relationship between gender and action is offered based on the results. The female CFNI was not related to any scenario response, though the sub-domain |thin| was negatively related to control and positively related to nervous and concern. Possible explanations for these relationships are discussed based on gender theory literature and contrasted with previous experiments.|
