Previous literature suggests that measures of speech and measures of cognition, fatigue, anxiety, and depression are related; however, these relationships have not been examined in individuals with Parkinson disease (PD). The purpose of the current study was to examine the relationships between measures of speech and measures of cognition, fatigue, anxiety, and depression in individuals with PD and determine if cognitive and psychological measures are predictive of speech. A total of 17 individuals with PD participated in the current study. Measures of speech fluency and acoustic measure of phonation, articulation, and prosody were collected. Participants were also asked to complete a series of tests and questionnaires designed to measure cognition, fatigue, anxiety, and depression. Pearson Product Moment Correlations and Spearman's Rank Order Correlations were utilized to examine relationships. A series of multiple regressions were conducted to examine the predictive nature between variables. Measures of cognition were significantly correlated with five measures of prosody and two measures of fluency. Cognitive measures were also predictive of changes in prosody and fluency. Measures of fatigue were significantly correlated with one measure of prosody and were predictive of changes in prosody. Relative to anxiety, measures of anxiety were significantly correlated with one measure of phonation and four measures of prosody. Measures of anxiety were also predictive of changes in phonation and prosody. Finally, measures of depression were significantly correlated with and predictive of one measure of prosody. Overall, the current study has found multiple relationships between measures of speech and measures of cognition, fatigue, anxiety, and depression in individuals with PD. Future research should examine these relationships further in individuals with PD along with other populations.
